Copyright and Fair Use: Section 107 of the United States Copyright Act (Title 17, U.S. Code) contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered "fair," such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

the nature of the copyrighted work;

the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Project South Asia has made every good faith effort to abide by the copyright laws of the United States of America. In the United States, all materials published prior to 1923 are in the public domain. Items published between 1923 and 1964 may be in the public domain if their original copyrights were not renewed at the end of the initial 28-year copyright period. In some cases Project South Asia has been unable to determine the copyright status of some works. If you are a copyright holder and we have inadvertently infringed on your copyrighted material, please inform us. The material in question will be removed from the Project South Asia Website, pending resolution of its copyright status.
